Outdoors Venues
Outdoor Venues
Here at First Adventure, we use a number of outdoor climbing venues around Yorkshire and the Peak District. We select our venues to best suit the course and give a range of options to ensure customer satisfaction. As we are independent we can offer any course privately at any venue, we have selected a few for venues we use regularly to show you to give you some inspiration.
Climbing at Almscliffe
Almscliffe is a gritstone outcrop about 25 minutes from Leeds just outside the village of Huby. Offering climbs for all abilities and stunning 360 panoramic views from the top. Almscliffe is an excellent venue for all abilities and we run the majority of our half day courses here; however due to its proximity to Leeds, ease of access and selection of easy route it can be a popular venue for local climbers and groups alike. If you would like more information about Almscliffe please contact us
Brimham Rocks
Brimham Rocks is a gritstone venue about 1 hour from Leeds, not far from the village of Summer Bridge. Brimham is a National Trust Park and offers a number of facilities that most crags don't such as toilets and a café.
It has a magical feel with stunning views from the top of the crag. Most of the climbing is set in the surrounding woods on large free standing boulders and cliff faces. Brimham is popular with both climbers, walkers and day trippers so it can be very busy some weekends.
The venue offers climbing for all abilities and is best suited for a full day climbing lessons rather than our half day and Rock Rigging course.
Please note the car park costs around £9 for the Day for non National Trust members and is not included in the course.
Climbing at Ilkely Moor
The Cow & Calfe is on Ilkely moor about 45 minutes from Leeds and approximately 5 minutes drive from Ilkley town centre. It is popular with walkers, day trippers and climbers and although the venue offers some breath-taking views, most of the climbing takes place in the main quarry. But don’t let this put you off as the climbing is some of the tallest in the area and offers a real sense of achievement.
We recommend this venue for our Rock Rigging Course as it offers a wide range of different anchor points for you practise on. Ilkley is also ideal for half day climbing due to the 2 minute walk from the car park to the crag base. The car park is free and there is a café and toilets in the car park.
Climbing at Stanage
Stanage is just over an hour away from Leeds on the outskirts of Sheffield offering some amazing panoramic views. The crag is one of the longest in the UK and offers climbing for all abilities. Because of its proximity to Sheffield, easy parking and number of routes makes Stanage very popular at weekends and bank holidays. However don't let this put you off, Stanage is excellent for a full days climbing. As Stanage is a national park there are a number of parking places, we will advise you which one to use should you book this venue. The walk in can be steep and is between 5 to 30 minutes depending on the car park used. We can run rock rigging and outdoor climbing sessions here but it is a better location for a day’s climbing.
